I was originally, trained in both television and radio as a student broadcaster in prep-school and in college. The era of digital technology had not yet become the standard of the industry; however, the skills and techniques I learned have made the transition to digital engineering fun and fascinating.
My first voice-over’s were during this same time period in my life. I voiced many projects, including public service announcements, sponsored commercials and number of school and volunteer organization projects. For a little more than a quarter of a century I have had the distinct pleasure of being a healthcare educator. It is my belief that learning should be made fun, interesting and realistic. It is my deep love of medicine and teaching that makes me a passionate “edu-tainer.” 1.
When I present a course I make every effort to combine the real-world sense of tension and urgency as I educate others how to make a difference for their patients. I have always done this in the most entertaining way possible. If I can make an audience relax and laugh I can make a lasting educational impression.
Part of teaching is stage presence and the ability to command a room. This is where my background in communication and medicine come together for an excellent integration with voice acting. Lecturing for several hours is akin to sitting in a booth and recording for several hours.
As I made my return into the broadcast arts I began getting voice-coaching again in mid-2015. I continue to have voice-coaching from an industry professional utilizing her critical ear and directorial expertise in honing my voice acting knowledge skills and abilities.
1. What is an edu-tainer I am an entertainer that delivers a message. Whether the message is the topic I am teaching at the time or the product or topic to which my voice will be given.
